PDO AND PGI WINES FROM VARNENSKY MISKET VARIETY FROM THE BLACK SEA REGION

Home / News

The Varnenski Misket is a white hybrid wine grape variety, selected by crossing Dimyat and Rhine Riesling varieties in 1951 and approved for use in 1971.

The variety has average resistance to low winter temperatures and very good resistance to cracking and gray rot. The variety is strong-growing with good fertility (the average yield per vine is 2.38 kg, and per hectare 1200-1500 kg). Medium ripening variety - ripens in the second half of September.

The leaf is medium-sized, thick, rounded, five-lobed, deeply cut, reticulate to blister-wrinkled on top, slightly downy on the bottom. The upper incisions are deep, lyre-shaped with almost parallel sides and a rounded bottom. the lower incisions are moderately deep with the same shape. The caudal notch is open, arrow-shaped, sometimes with a tooth. The cluster is medium-sized (12.5/6.5 cm) to small, cylindric-conical, with one wing, semi-compact to compact. The average mass of a grape is 100-130 g. The grain is small, oval, with a harmonious taste and a light musket aroma. The skin is thick, yellow-green to amber with a thick wax coating. The average mass of one grain is 1.55-2.02 g.

The moderate-continental climate, strongly influenced by the proximity of the Black Sea, with the characteristic breeze circulation, the relatively dry summer and the long and warm autumn, influence the development of specific characteristics of the variety in this region, making it suitable for PDO and PGI registration.

Both dry and liqueur wine are obtained from the variety. The key aromas of Varna misket are those of rose, interesting salty and mineral (wet stone) notes, accompanied by citrus, white flowers and herbs.

It goes well with light salads and stewed vegetables, pasta with lighter white sauces, young cheeses, fish and seafood delicacies. Also suitable for an aperitif.

The "Sea and Wine" project aims to raise awareness about the benefits of PDO and PGI registration, thereby increasing the competitiveness of wines from the Black Sea region.
