EUROPEAN WINE MARKET REVIEW 2021-2022
Production of wine and must in the EU - 2021-2022 is 159 million hl.
• The total production of wine and must for the period 2021/22 is 159 million hl.
• Two-thirds of the wines produced are quality wines (this share remains stable: 45% are with PDO and 21% are PGI). In the last decade, there has been a trend towards a slight increase in the production of PDO and varietal wines, stability in the level of PGI production and a downward trend in the production of wines without appellations.
• More and more EU member states prefer the production of quality wines: PDO and PGI, and in some countries this represents 95% of the production in the respective country, and it is still only 24%.
• The total EU export of wine and must for the period 2021/22 is 32 billion hl. in the amount of 17.215 billion euros
• As a percentage in hectoliters, the share of exported wines with PGI and PDO in total for the EU is 74%, compared to other wines and must, and correspondingly in terms of the total volume in euros - for the EU 92% are quality wines.
The aim of the "Sea and Wine" project is to inform about the European Union's PDO and PGI scheme regarding the specific quality, reputation and other characteristics of wine due to its specific geographical environment or its origin, as well as to emphasize the responsible wine consumption and the risk of harmful alcohol consumption. This is planned to be done in a series of publications on the subject, brochures, leaflets, posters, meetings with interested persons and participation in specialized exhibitions. Increasing the number of PDO and PGI registered wines will increase the competitiveness of the Black Sea region.
